Sharing The Road With Cyclists
As soon as the weather permits some people decide to swap their car or bus pass for a bicycle.
Sharing the roads with cyclists has always been somewhat of a heated topic of conversation for both bikers and drivers alike. It’s safe to say both parties number one priority is to avoid a collision with one another so here are some tips on how to safely share the road with cyclists.
- Don’t follow too close: Cyclists can stop quicker than a motor vehicle which is why it’s important to be prepared just in case. It is recommended to keep at least a three to four second following distance from a bike.
- Leave plenty of room when passing: It is recommended to leave at least a meter between your vehicle and a cyclist when passing.
- Check for cyclists before making a turn: Plan your turns in advance if possible and be aware of bike lanes.
- Avoid using your horn when passing a cyclist: Startling a cyclist can be dangerous. Keep the road safe and respectful, avoid using your horn unless necessary when passing a bike.
- Be extra alert when it’s raining: Wet weather conditions can affect your ability to see cyclists. Ensure your windshield wipers are in good condition, slow down and leave plenty of room for bikes.
- Use your signal: Signal your intention well in advance so a cyclist can see what your next move is.
- Check your mirrors every 5 to 8 seconds: Keep aware of your surroundings at all times – your mirrors are important when it comes to avoiding collisions.
Keep these helpful hints in mind next time you encounter a cyclist on the road.
